Marked the largest in number, 718 works from 36 countries were considered in the competition section of Seoul Net Festival 2006. Not only the number of applicants, but the variety of countries (from east Europe to Latin America) enlarged the cultural horizon, which is very meaningful for online festival. Also, the online submission by FTP or URL reaches 30 % of all the submissions, which is affirming the position of Seoul Net Festival as a veritable online festival of moving image.

We have focused on the most creative works in artistic and popular dimension at the same time, so 89 works from 20 countries were selected as finalists for Seoul Net Festival 2006.

In international competition section Digital Express, putting the importance in originality and unique image experiment, as well as the quality of work in-depth, we selected 33 works from 17 countries in Cinema4Net category and 23 works from 14 countries in Web-Work category. In Cinema4Net category, through various genres such as fiction, animation of various techniques, docu-essay and experimental, we selected the most outstanding works. Especially, among so many excellent animation works of keen competition, we have noticed the works which are showing originality and creativity, not only by the refined techniques, but also by the unique style of artist. Also, we have a wide spectrum of Web-Work category, from linear flash animation works to cinematic web works, game and interactive commercial works. In international competition section Digital Express are also featuring brilliant Korean works : in Cinema4Net category, <Can you go through?> of Joo-Young Ban, curious 3D animation of exciting imagination, <A Perfect Red Snapper Dish> of Hong-Jin Na, story of a man seized by gruesome delusion for “a perfect red snapper dish”, <Paradise> of Jong-Kwan Kim, a beautiful and lyrical cine-poem, and <A Day Out> of Jong-Yoon Lee, shocking film regarding sexual violence in the army crossing expressions of reality and fantasy. In Web-Work category, <Bean Pole> of Post Visual was selected as an impressive and stylish interactive commercial work featuring Daniel Henny and Gwyneth Paltrow.

In Korean competition section Next Stream, focusing on the promising young talents as the first criterion, we have selected 24 works in Cinema4Net category and 9 works in Web-Work category. In Cinema4Net category, there were so many submissions of fiction films and we could find daring expressions of sex, crime and violence, as well as outstanding camera working. Especially, among many medium-length films, considering the characteristic of online viewing, we appreciated the artists’ competence to develop stories attracting the online spectators without losing intense rhythm. We could find a number of films produced by new method such as HDV or HD, also, very attractive sequences using brilliant shooting and motion graphic scenes, but they often missed the quality in-depth. Even though the ideas and the trials can be highly appreciated, sometimes they didn’t have the ability to achieve an outcome. It was a pity not to find the original works of their own by creative use of simple techniques. Also, we regret so much that we couldn’t find the experimental works of challenging spirit, neither docu-essay works with artistic workmanship. In Web-Work category, linear flash animation works and interactive web-works such as game will be presented : <un_com_for_table> of Hyung-Jun Im is a joyful imagination regarding interface, a basis of web-work, Hyung-Min Park and Jun-Soo Park’s <Epistle> is a lyrical meditation of life with their elegant expressions and Ji-Juk Jung’s <The Blue Glass Bird> is a sensitive flash animation work with her original characters and distinct colors.
